The average equity mutual fund has an MER (management expense ratio) of 2.6%, Glorianne Stromberg, the former OSC commissioner who challenged many of the sales practices of the fund industry, explained that over a 20 year time frame, high MERS of 2.5% could erode nearly 50% of an investor's retirement capital, which she described as; 'an egregious encroachment of capital'.
